James R. Katzer

James R Katzer is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a member of the “Alternative Liquid Transportation Fuels” Panel at the National Research Council and an independent energy consultant.

As a Visiting Scholar at MIT from 2004 to 2007, he was the Executive Editor and Director of the MIT study on "The Future of Coal in a Carbon Constrained World".

Jim had joined the Central Research Laboratory of the Mobil Oil Corporation in 1981. He had managing positions in research, technical service, planning and finance before being appointed Vice President, Technology, in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer, Mobil Oil Corporation and further Manager of Strategic Planning and Program Analysis for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company.

Before joining Mobil, he was a professor of chemical engineering and the first Director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology at the University of Delaware.

He received a B.S. degree from Iowa State and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from MIT.

Jim is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has more than 80 publications in technical journals, holds several patents, and co-authored and edited several books.
