

The 2009 World CTL Award has been granted to Dr. Theo Lee for his pioneering scientific work in CTL and his achievements as an entrepreneur and international developer.
The ceremony will take place on 27 March, 2009 in Washington D.C. in the course of the conclusion of World CTL 2009.
The 2009 World CTL Award will be presented to Dr. Theo Lee by Dr. Lowell Miller, Director of the Office of Sequestration, Hydrogen and Clean Coal Fuels, U.S. Department Of Energy.
Dr. Theo Lee is a Vice President and the Chief Technology Officer of Headwaters CTL, LLC.
He started his career in 1980 with the Alberta Research Council in studying the liquefaction behaviour of Alberta sub-bituminous coal and tar sand bitumen.
In 1992, Dr. Lee joined Hydrocarbon Research Inc. (HRI), where he concentrated on Direct Coal Liquefaction and co-processing development under the US Department of Energy CTL initiatives and developed the catalytic two-stage liquefaction process (CTSL) using ebullated bed reactor technology.
In 1995, in collaboration with other engineers, Dr. Lee acquired HRI’s R&D Center to form Hydrocarbon Technologies, Inc. (HTI). In addition to CTL, Dr. Lee led HTI to develop dispersed catalysts for Direct Coal Liquefaction and Fischer Tropsch.
Dr. Lee’s entrepreneur spirit led the company, and its subsequent acquirer Headwaters, to establish successful commercial links in various countries including in China, India and the Philippines Islands.
The World CTL Award is granted to an eminent personality who has contributed substantially to the understanding and development of CTL.
